Positive Self-Talk

Posted by georgiannasaysjustdoyou on December 19, 2010

“Positive Self-Talk” is a concept I first learned about in a Batterers Intervention training. Its intent is to get people re-thinking the energy they are putting out to the world that originates in your thoughts. We all put ourselves down at one time or another. We have hesistated to move forward because we were doubtful that we would be successful…so then what would be the point? Positive self-talk? Does it mean that if you force yourself to smile or think happy thoughts that you will feel happy? No, I am not suggesting that. I am, however, suggesting that it makes you conscious of your actual feelings so that you make a choice about how you express it. And that the more you think happy thoughts, the more your inner energy will gravitate towards happiness. Also, misery breeds misery. So if you say something negative, even to yourself, you breed negativity (in yourself). Remember “The Little Engine That Could”? We have been trying to teach positive self-talk for a very long time. It is no mistake that we target this kind of thinking towards children. They listen better than we do (okay, sometimes they do, depends on if they hit puberty or not!). If you think you can, then you can. It doesn’t mean you abandon reality. You think you will be an instant millionaire, close your eyes and open them and poof! Seriously? It does mean that you start on a path that will get you closer and closer to your goal or dream. If you tell yourself that you can’t, then you are defeated before you even begin. If you want to become a millionaire, many people have done it even with serious obstacles. Why not you? But it will not likely be overnight and not likely without the hard work. So take some time and say something nice to yourself today. Think positively about a goal you have for today. And yes, I would recommend smiling even if you don’t feel like it. I don’t have the answers, but I always have thoughts.

  2. Negative talk serves no purpose so for that reason alone, all talk should be positive talk!!

Happy Holidays Georgianna. Thanks for all you do!!
