Owning Up…

Posted by georgiannasaysjustdoyou on December 12, 2010

One of the hardest things for me to do is own up to my part of something not working out.  I am guessing it is hard for most people.  We all want to be right even when we know we have the capacity to be wrong, often.

Sound like you?  No way…

In my blog “Getting Past Being Angry” I mention that it doesn’t matter if you are right or wrong if the person you are angry with feels bad about themselves and you do not get the result you want.  Harmony and/or happiness.

Sometimes you screw things up knowingly, but in the moment you just don’t care.  Later, you feel guilty.  Sometimes you yell at someone (kids or partner – I know, I know, we NEVER yell…wink wink).  Sometimes you are involved in a project or a job and it doesn’t go the way you planned it.

Sometimes you FAIL.

It is a fear of failure that can keep us from owning up to our part in what went wrong.  It is a label we do not want or need.  So we justify the outcome by pointing the finger elsewhere.  It somehow makes us feel better to think we were not responsible for the unplanned and unwelcome outcome.

Remember that hindsight is foresight.

This means that you hurt yourself by not reflecting and owning up to your part in what did not work out.  The benefit of doing so is that you get to learn from the situation and use that lesson for future behavior.

So own up to your part. Help yourself become the best you possible.

I do not have the answers, but I always have thoughts.  Won’t you share yours?
