Taking Risks

Posted by georgiannasaysjustdoyou on September 20, 2010

Most people are not risk-takers.  Comfort zones help them get through each day.  Sounds nice right?  Not necessarily.  Think about it.  Comfort zones are not necessarily good things.  They are just things that you know, that you are familiar with and that you are able to plan on.  Taking a risk, even for a good cause, is scary.  People don’t like feeling the anxiety and uncertainty of what would happen in a worse case scenario.  They don’t care that you might actually learn something from falling or failing.

What is important to know is that nothing great happens without some form of risk (yeah, okay, shoot me now).  You have to take a step in order to move forward.  Speaking as someone who has failed many times, I am going to advocate for some risk.  Start with eating a food you have never tried and is something you would not normally even think of trying.  Why food?  Well, it goes in your body, so there is a commitment there.  You are either eating it, or you are not.  So there is no fudging the eating of a new food.  So if you try a bite and that’s it, does it count?  Of course it does!  You may never try that food again, but you went through a process to decide on what food (so what level of risk); what you would do if you liked it (success) and what you would do if you did not (the back up plan).  Keep doing that until that game begins to develop rules that put you in a comfort zone.

Risks are not all about work, they are in friendships, love, parenting, activities, worship.  You take a risk every day when you get out of bed and go into the world!

Here’s to risks and to growing outside of our comfort zones!

I don’t have the answers, but I always have thoughts.  Won’t you share yours?

  1. That’s it. To have what we’ve never had, we must do what we’ve never done.
