Airing Dirty Laundry

Posted by georgiannasaysjustdoyou on June 29, 2010

While it is tempting to let the world know you feel you have been wronged, airing your dirty laundry in public is not a pretty sight.  Handling conflict is often difficult.  Whether you are in the wrong or in the right is irrelevant.  How you handle the situation says a lot about the person you are.

Social Networking has made this practice more visible and an instant way to let the world (your world of followers and friends) know what you are feeling.  Too often, people post things that are intentional and not very pretty.  Sometimes it is because they are in pain (emotionally or physically).  Sometimes it is that they are so consumed by how mad they are, they want the world to know and sometimes to get validation for how they feel.  How many people have “liked” a post on facebook when one person was cussing out or calling out another on facebook?  Think it is not common?  I can’t imagine I am the only one seeing this.

Unfortunately this is not restricted to typical teenage behavior.  Many adults do this routinely.

This blog is a caution for those who do their laundry in public.  You have a choice in what you do and say (or in this example, write).  I am suggesting that it creates an impression about you that you may not want the world to have.  It can paint you as a bitter and uneducated person even if that is not how you see yourself.  Ask yourself what your point is in posting this and what do you hope to get from it.  If it is to hurt or out someone, are you okay with that motive and are you okay with people seeing you that way?  People have long memories.  And knowing some of these people really well on a personal basis, often their posts do not reflect what I know of them…but their posts cause me to pause.

I know how I have handled these situations with my “friends” and “followers” on my Facebook and Twitter accounts.  I am more curious about how you, the readers of the blog, feel about this and would love to hear examples of how you have handled it.

I don’t have the answers, but I always have thoughts.  Won’t you share yours?

    Thanks for this great article

It is important to let the world know about what they really do. It is important for the world to be conscious of what they share
