Agree to Disagree, but don’t be Disagreeable!

Posted by georgiannasaysjustdoyou on June 21, 2010

I heard that this morning at an event and was told that it was something Lenny Zakim used to say.  I love it.  We all have opinions on just about everything.  It is not likely we will agree with everyone on everything.  Therefore, it is important to find grace in moments when you are passionate about your position and yet you are in conversation with someone who does not agree with you.

That’s okay.  Agree to disagree.  So I asked, because I can, what happens when you are the implementor of an action and your advisors are not in agreement?  What then?  That is when you will have to make a decision to act and let the different perspectives weigh in on your next step.  If you are the implementor, then you have a role, whether self-appointed or otherwise.  So do it, and know that some people will always disagree with you…no matter what.

Being disagreeable may get you remembered, but perhaps not in the way you would want.  Regardless of the stakes, there is only so much you can do.  Do what you can, then with grace, allow the implementors to do their thing.

I don’t have the answers, but I always have thoughts.  Won’t you share yours?
